Three studies in the journals Science and Nature have revealed new information on the Chelyabinsk meteorite, including its potential origin, and details of the meteorite’s spectacular entry into Earth’s atmosphere!

New information on Chelyabinsk:

– A comprehensive study of the impact, including characterization of the meteorite and shockwave has been compiled by an international group of researchers, including Center for Meteorite Studies graduate Matthew Sanborn (Ph. D., 2012); read full details here and here!

– The frequency of meteorite events of this scale is potentially much higher than previously believed; read full details here and here!

– Based on calculations of its trajectory and analysis of its structure, the Chelyabinsk meteorite may have originally been part of asteroid 86039; read the full details here!
