CMS at 2013 Meteoritical Society Meeting

In late July, members of the Center attended the 76th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society in Edmonton, Canada.

This year's conference was hosted by the University of Alberta, and featured a behind-the-scenes tour of their cryogenic meteorite facility, built specifically to house and curate frozen specimens of the Tagish Lake meteorite.

Director Meenakshi Wadhwa, Research Professional Rebekah Hines, Ph.D. Candidate Curtis Williams and Ph.D. Student Prajkta Mane presented recent CMS findings, and Assistant Director Melissa Morris, Collection Manager Laurence Garvie, and Laboratory Manager Steve Romaniello were co-authors on research presented at the meeting.

Former CMS Faculty Research Associate (and current CMS Affiliate) Audrey Bouvier was presented with the prestigious Nier Prize, for significant contributions to understanding the isotopic compositions of Solar System materials and the timescales of their formation.  The award recognizes significant research in the field of meteoritics and closely related fields by a young scientist under the age of 35, and the citation was presented by CMS Director Meenakshi Wadhwa, a former recipient of the Nier Prize.

The Meteoritical Society includes over 1,000 scientists and enthusiasts from 52 countries, who study meteorites, cosmic dust, asteroids, comets, samples returned by space missions, impact craters, and the origins of the Solar System.
