Infrasound Waves from Chelyabinsk Meteorite Circled the World – Twice!

A new study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters has shown that infrasound waves generated by the dramatic entrance into Earth's atmosphere by the Chelyabinsk meteorite circled the planet twice, and persisted for almost three days.  The study also gives a preliminary estimate of the energy released by the meteorite's desintegration, equivalent to 460 kilotons of TNT.  You can read the paper here, and learn more about the Chelyabinsk meteorite, on display at the Center for Meteorite Studies, in the Meteorite Gallery!
