Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies

Center hosts Microparticle Handling Workshop!

In conjunction with the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) and the NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC), Center Director Rhonda Stroud and her research group hosted the Small Sample Handling workshop in early June.

Because the study and analysis of extraterrestrial samples play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of our Solar System, and given the uniqueness of each sample, proper handling training is critical to ensure the quality of analyses and to provide appropriate care and protection for samples. Thus, the workshop focused on state-of-the-art techniques in microparticle handling, particle picking, embedding and ultramicrotomy for early and mid-career members of the NASA sample analysis community.

Workshop participants honed their skills using particles from the Murchison meteorite at ASU in order to advance their own work on samples from the NASA JSC collections including OSIRIS-Rex, Cosmic Dust and Antarctic Meteorite samples.

The Small Sample Handling workshop was held on ASU’s Tempe campus, June 4th through 6th.
