New paper on meteorite parent bodies

While we know that the majority of meteorites recovered on Earth originate in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, determining exactly which asteroids specific meteorites come from is a challenge.

Center Assistant Director Devin Schrader and colleague Dr. Jemma Davidson (Carnegie Institution for Science) have published a new paper that constrains the thermal histories and relationships of certain aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrite types, thereby shedding light on their likely distinct parent bodies.

This information will be especially pertinent when applied to sample return missions such as Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx, with the potential to provide substantial insight into the formational histories of asteroids Ryugu and Bennu, respectively.
