New AZ meteorite classification underway!

April 17, 2024 the skies over Phoenix lit up with a green flash of light, heralding the arrival of Arizona’s newest meteorite. Read about the circumstances of the fall, here!

Despite the meteorite not being found immediately after the fall, lucky meteorite hunters have been rewarded for their year-long patience this week, and stones have been brought to the Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies for evaluation under the unofficial meteorite name Black Silver Mine.

Since then, Center Meteorite Curator Laurence Garvie has been hard at work investigating the chemical and mineralogical content of this new extraterrestrial arrival, in order to determine its classification relative to known meteorites. Details are still under wraps, but stay tuned for an update on Black Silver Mine!
